Most parents who contact me are frustrated and confused
Their child is bright, but struggling. Teachers consider her/him easily distracted and unable to work to their potential. They may or may not have been diagnosed with dyslexia (because most teachers are not trained to recognize the symptoms.) They may not even be exhibiting any of the “traditional” dyslexic symptoms, like word or letter reversals. Or perhaps a language processing challenge has been identified, and after thousands of dollars of tutoring, and remediation there is little, or no progress.
Usually, any approach that’s been taken has never gotten to the root cause of the problem, which is disorientation.
The Davis Method is not only a “solution to a reading problem,” it’s a set of tools to use for a different, creative processing style that is empowering for the individual, and can actually be life-changing.
What we do together
When a student begins a Davis Program, the first thing they learn is that there is nothing wrong with their brain. Picture-thinkers are able to take in information in highly creative and holistic ways, and they are shown how that ability can work to their advantage.
We then move on to discover what exactly triggers the student’s disorientation and how he experiences it. Sometimes a word or words can become blurry. Other times words or letters can flip around, or move on the page. Some people do not experience any movement of letters, or words at all—but lose focus, or read and reread with little, or no comprehension. Identifying the triggers and their cause allows us to resolve the confusion and eliminate them, so the student can accurately process the information, and reading becomes easier. Many clients have described the Davis Program as breaking down the invisible walls and barriers to reading and writing.
Because the work is one-on-one and highly individualized, the client can work in a supportive, non-judgmental environment where she can explore her learning style and not be afraid of making mistakes or “being wrong.” We work in sessions that combine many different activities, utilizing the imagination and visual abilities of this type of learner. We discuss ideas, look at strengths and weaknesses, work with clay, and learn physical and mental “exercises” to approach learning – or any activity – with a calm, focused, “oriented mind.” The Davis Method systematically builds a unique arsenal of understanding and tools that the reader/learner can take with her and practice at home, and throughout her life.
The Davis methods are effective for both children and adults and, in either case, can quickly change lives!
Almost immediately, clients will feel more in control of their learning. They have greater confidence and an increased capacity to work with the written word. Reading and writing is no longer a dreaded task, and children often go from a reading level that’s below grade level to one that’s above. Most important, clients come to understand that the way they learn is unique and remarkable – and they begin to see their brain as an ally, sometimes for the first time in their lives.
After Your Program
You will leave the program with all of the tools, understanding, and materials necessary to achieve positive results and continue follow-up at home. The follow-up is essential in sustaining and continuing the success gained during the program.
Support training is provided on the last day of the program for family members, tutor(s), and/or teacher(s) who will support the client in this follow up.
Support: The goal of New Perspectives in Learning is for you to be successful and happy while overcoming the obstacles with dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, or other learning challenges. All of my efforts are to ensure that you have continued support, even after your program is over. Unlimited phone calls, emails, texts, and virtual (Zoom/Skype) sessions are available and encouraged. Three 1-2 hour post-program review sessions, that can be done virtually, are also included in the program, if needed.
The first step is an Initial Consultation
For the Davis Program to be effective, a person must be personally motivated and willing to improve, or change some aspect of their learning, behavior, or school performance. A formal diagnosis of a learning disability is NOT necessary.
At the initial consultation, an informal assessment will determine if the Davis® Program is a suitable solution for the client’s learning difficulties and goals. Call (973) 746-5037 or email Lynn@DyslexiaNJ.com to set up an initial consultation. I will assess your needs and personal goals, and determine which program is right for you.
